Associate Director of Development Position Overview:

Common Threads (CT) is seeking a highly motivated Associate Director of Development to grow Common Threads’ network of stakeholders, funders, and partners by cultivating, managing and stewarding relationships with institutional and corporate funders, and individual donors, and earning gifts in select CT markets. This position reports to the VP of Development and works with the Development Team and with Program and Evaluation managers across the organization to engage all constituents in Common Threads’ mission using sponsorship and donation opportunities, campaigns, events, and volunteer and thought leadership activities.

This entrepreneurial ‘A-player’ will be an integral part of Common Threads’ national Development Team, working to seek and secure corporate and foundation support, and to support regional Board engagement and individual donor stewardship for select CT markets beginning with Los Angeles and Austin. The Associate Director of Development will engage in a variety of development and stakeholder engagement activities, including but not limited to prospecting, outreach, proposal writing, negotiation, in-person meetings with current and would-be donors and institutional funders, and some event coordination and publicity activities. This position will work with team members and volunteer professionals on relevant messaging, marketing and collateral as needed. All team members are responsible for excellent stewardship and database management to support ongoing donor retention and organizational sustainability.

This position is sought in either Austin, TX (the site of our national headquarter), Los Angeles, CA, or Chicago, IL to support Common Threads’ growth needs in LA county in particular while contributing to revenue in other markets and nationally as assigned. Austin and Chicago have offices to report to, while team members in LA work from their home office. Qualified candidates should have access to a car and should be comfortable working with and reporting to colleagues remotely.   • Regional Board Support, Stewardship, and Engagement
    • Work with regional Board Chair, VP of Development and CEO to support regional Boards and prospective individual donors – Initial focus for this work will be on the LA market and the Austin market, with growth to other markets. Assoc. Director will ensure the members’ stewardship and that their support is helping drive engagement with CT through event attendance and/or corporate donor/ sponsor introductions etc.
    • Work with LA Program Manager, LA Board Chair to coordinate LA Board member, individual and volunteer engagement on the ground.
    • Work with Austin team (Program staff and Executive leadership) to identify and cultivate or direct cultivation of regional Texas board members)
  • Corporate Partnerships & Event Sponsorships (focus on new corporate relationships)
    • In 2018 steward existing relationships in select assigned geographic markets including LA, Austin, and the growth markets of Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso.
    • In 2019, with board and team, secure new corporate and/or foundation relationships with a goal of raising of $400,000 in new corporate and/or foundation accounts
    • Corporate and Foundation support focused on LA and TX markets, though corporate and foundation prospecting and proposal writing may be shared across Development team and priorities may shift as assigned
    • Contribute to continual movement of prospects through the Institutional Donor pipeline – including prospect research, outreach, proposal writing, negotiation, gift closing, and stewardship.
  • Stewardship and Development Communications Support
    • Working with LA Board Chair and Development team, and with TX CT staff, to engage donors and sponsors in Cocktails, Panels, and special events in designated markets and
    • Work with Events contractors and Marketing & Events Coordinator to ensure consistent and appropriate funder recognition in not only collateral but also at events and in public forums/ panels and on Social Media and outreach
    • Track donor stewardship and recognition across communications channels, working with communications support and Sr. Development Manager as needed
  • Miscellaneous
    • Analyze and gather donor statistics and analytics
    • Support Development Team processes and procedures and build best practices internally as the department grows and organization scales
    • Spend 30 minutes each week identifying and nurturing A Players

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Five years of experience in managing funder relationships
  • Demonstrated experience with project and account management
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience in winning five-figure gifts
  • Experienced relationship manager, responsible for externally-facing partnerships or stakeholders
  • A commitment to the mission and values of Common Threads


Position receives 11 paid holidays, 3 weeks of PTO (earned prorated over the year), is eligible for full benefits on the first day of the month after 60 days of service, and is eligible for 401(k) participation and match after one year of service.
