Nonprofit Development/ Fundraising Intern Overview:

Common Threads is seeking a volunteer Development/ Fundraising Intern to be housed in our Chicago office, located at 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza. The weekly schedule of the internship is flexible, depending on the availability and needs of the candidate; however, Common Threads seeks candidates who are able to work a minimum of 12-16 hours/week for at least three months.

As a Development/ Fundraising Intern you will have the opportunity to: gain experience in funder prospecting and communication and philanthropy operations; learn how a national nonprofit operates; make a difference in the lives of the teachers, parents, schools, and children we serve; and gain relevant experience for a career in the nonprofit sector or professional communications field. All internships are unpaid, but can be completed for academic credit.

The Interns will work closely with Common Threadsí development team.

Primary Responsibilities include:

Fundraising - Prospecting and Communications

  • Research new private and public funding prospects for Common Threadsí nine markets and assess mission fit of prospects
  • Assist with the creation and preparation of communication materials
  • Draft Letters of Inquiry and applications to potential funders and help grants team prepare other materials for proposal submissions

Individual Donor Support and Philanthropy Operations

  • Support Sr. Development Manager with philanthropy operations--supporting donor and stakeholder database, donor appeals and thanks, and online outreach and messaging; and
  • Work with VP to update a Development Team policies and procedures manual;

Ideal Qualifications & Characteristics:

  • Excellent work ethic and reliability
  • Desire to learn new skills and work on a variety of projects
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Polished communication skills, diplomacy, and consideration of the confidentiality of our stakeholders and donors
  • Detail oriented
  • An interest in nonprofit fundraising, professional communication, and/or grants administration
  • You should be free between 12-16 hours (across 2-3 days)/ week for at least 3 months. Ideal candidates are available to start in mid-July and intern through mid-October (to take part in our annual Chicago Cook-off fundraiser on October 4th!)
